thisCurated by Lavanya Mallidi, ET Online|Jul 27, 2026, 10:41:53 AM IST1/7Why you should file ITR even if your

income isn't taxableMany people assume that if their income falls below the taxable limit, there's no reason to file a

return. But skipping it could mean missing out on real financial benefits — from loan approvals to tax refunds.

Here's why filing anyway is a smart move.ET Online2/7For loan & financial approvals, your ITR is your proofWhenever

you apply for a home loan, vehicle loan, or even certain credit cards and insurance policies, banks and lenders almost

always ask for your last few years of income tax returns. It's how they verify your source of income and repayment

capacity. Without ITRs on record, your loan application could face delays — or rejection — even if your

income is genuinely below the tax limit.Getty Images3/7Had tax deducted at source? You could get it backTDS (Tax

Deducted at Source) is common today, especially for freelancers, contract workers, and anyone earning bank interest. The

catch is, this tax gets deducted automatically, even if your total income doesn't actually fall in the taxable bracket.

The only way to reclaim that money is by filing an income tax return. Skip it, and that refund stays with the

government.Getty Images4/7Planning to travel abroad? You may need thisWhether it's a planned vacation, a work trip, or a

sudden opportunity, many countries require proof of financial stability during visa processing, and past income tax

returns are one of the most commonly requested documents. Life is unpredictable, and having a few years of ITRs filed

means you won't be scrambling at the last minute when an opportunity to travel comes up.Getty Images5/7No payslip? Your

ITR can fill that gapSalaried employees usually have salary slips to show as income proof whenever needed. But

freelancers, consultants, and self-employed individuals often don't have any equivalent document. Filing an income tax

return gives you an official, government-recognized record of your earnings — useful for renting a home, applying

for loans, or any situation where you need to prove how much you earn.Getty Images6/7Lost money on stocks, crypto, pr

Property? Don't lose the benefit tooIf you've invested in shares, cryptocurrency, real estate, or other assets and sold

at a loss, you're allowed to carry that loss forward for up to 8 years and offset it against future gains. But this

benefit is only available if you've filed your ITR for the year the loss occurred. Miss the filing, and you lose the

ability to claim it later, even if the loss itself was real.Getty Images7/7Filing doesn't have to be complicatedIf all

this sounds useful but the process feels overwhelming, you're not alone, many people delay filing simply because they're

unsure how to do it correctly. Expert can handle your entire ITR filing accurately, help you claim the maximum refund

you're eligible for, and take the hassle off your hands completely. File your return today and stay financially prepared

for whatever comes next.Getty ImagesRead more onfile ITR even if income is below taxable limitwhy file income tax
