Naira Gains at Parallel Market, Slips at Official NFEM Window as Rates Converge August 7, 2026 Ogechukwu Okeke No

Nigeria’s currency posted mixed results on Thursday, strengthening on the streets even as it lost ground in the
official foreign exchange window — a split performance that continues to narrow the long-standing gap between the two
markets. The naira firmed up to ₦1,416 per dollar in the parallel market, commonly known as the black market,
improving from ₦1,420 per dollar recorded the previous day. At the same time, the currency weakened within the
official channel, signalling that Nigeria’s dual exchange rate dynamics remain far from settled. What the Numbers
Show Data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) revealed that the indicative rate at the Nigerian Foreign
Exchange Market (NFEM) climbed to ₦1,365.1 per dollar, up from ₦1,363.11 per dollar on Wednesday. That shift
represents a depreciation of ₦1.99 for the naira at the official window, even as the parallel market moved in the
opposite direction. As a result of these contrasting movements, the gap between the two markets — a figure economists
and forex traders track closely — narrowed to ₦50.9 per dollar, down from ₦59.11 per dollar a day earlier. A
shrinking gap between official and parallel rates is typically read as a sign of improving market efficiency, since a
wide spread historically fuels arbitrage, round-tripping, and speculative dollar hoarding. Trading Activity Picks Up
Beyond the rate movements, market activity also strengthened. Interbank turnover at the NFEM jumped by 31 percent,
rising to ₦98.8 million from ₦75.4 million on Wednesday. Higher turnover generally points to increased dollar
liquidity and more active participation from banks and authorised dealers — a potentially encouraging signal for a
market that has struggled with intermittent liquidity shortages over the past two years. Why This Matters for Everyday
Nigerians For millions of Nigerians, movements in the exchange rate go well beyond financial headlines — they directly
shape the cost of imported goods, fuel, food items, and school fees pegged to foreign currency. A stronger parallel
market rate can offer modest relief for individuals and small businesses who rely on the black market for dollar
transactions, particularly those involved in importation, freelance work paid in foreign currency, or overseas
remittances. However, the simultaneous depreciation at the official NFEM window is a reminder that currency stability in
Nigeria remains fragile, shaped by shifting oil revenues, foreign reserve levels, and CBN interventions. The Bigger
Picture: Nigeria’s Currency Reform Journey Since unifying its multiple exchange rate windows in 2023, the CBN has
worked to push more forex transactions through official, market-reflective channels rather than the parallel market,
which historically traded at a steep premium to official rates. The persistent narrowing of the spread between NFEM and
parallel market rates suggests those reforms may be gradually taking hold, even as day-to-day volatility continues.
Analysts often point to CBN dollar sales, improved remittance inflows, and foreign portfolio investment as key drivers
capable of sustaining naira stability over the medium term. What to Watch Next Market watchers will be keeping a close
eye on whether this narrowing spread holds in the coming weeks, or whether it proves to be a temporary fluctuation
driven by short-term liquidity conditions. Continued increases in NFEM turnover would be a particularly encouraging
sign, as sustained trading volume tends to support more predictable and market-driven exchange rate discovery. For now,
the naira’s dual movement — gaining informally while slipping officially — captures the delicate balancing act
still playing out in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market. Business, National black market dollar rate Nigeria, CBN
