commodities -August 2, 2026 An uneven spread of the Indian monsoon is clouding the prospects of the kharif crops, while
the deficit in sowing of the summer crop has narrowed to 5% by July-end from over 20% at the month’s start. The
monsoon is forecast to be below-normal during August-September. A likely shortfall in maize production this year could
force ethanol makers to turn to rice. India’s gold jewellery demand dropped by 15% in the June quarter, though
investment demand increased. With US and China showing the way, investors returned to gold ETFs in the week ending July

An uneven spread of the South-West monsoon is causing concern in India despite a one per cent above-normal rainfall in
July making up, to some extent, for the 35 per cent deficient rain in June. Read more here2. With more than 3 lakh
hectares (lh) higher area sown during the past week, compared to the year-ago period, Indian farmers have further
bridged the deficit to less than 5 per cent, whereas the deficit was as high as 21 per cent until July 5. Read more
here3. India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday forecast “below normal” rain in August and during
August-September period. It predicted quantitatively less than 94 per cent of the long period average rainfall during
the second half of the monsoon. Read more here4. With jewellery demand dropping to the second lowest in the second
quarter since 2000, India’s gold demand in the June quarter declined by 6 per cent to 131 tonnes. This was because
