People celebrate after Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned and took responsibility for the NEET paper leak in
Bengaluru on Sunday 26 July 2026. | Photo Credit: SUDHAKARA JAIN The most important topic for analysis in our Editorial
section in the past week was the Bill tabled in Parliament to make punishment for paper leaks more stringent and the
expert panel set up on NEET revamp. Though the Editorial welcomes these initiatives, it also flags more important issues
on hand -- incentives for paper leaks, the frantic demand for medical seats and the ridiculously low seats on offer.
These key issues also need to be addressed. The recent controversies at HDFC Bank were also a topic for comment. First,
the MSRDC was offered a higher interest rate on their deposits. Though the practice is not uncommon, the way the bank
showed the extra payment as marketing expenses was clearly unacceptable. There was also an instance of misselling of
bonds for which some of the staff were sacked. The bank’s handling of these governance lapses was criticised in our
Editorial, which called for greater probity in the bank. The issue of restrictions on social media platforms and internet
access in the backdrop of the recent student protests was dissected in another Editorial. Though it warns of excessive
state control coming in the way of legitimate dissent, the Editorial also urges social media platforms to take more
responsibility over their content. In his weekly column Line&Length, TCA Srinivasa Raghavan, discusses the Modi
government’s handling of the recent protests against NEET paper leaks, and how that is going to impact its political
prospects in the near term. He calls for a more ‘soft touch’ approach from the government while handling the growing
criticism and resentment brewing across the nation.Read more here.Madan Sabnavis takes a hard look at the FCNR (B)
scheme launched by the RBI. He says the scheme will help boost forex reserves and liquidity, but banks will have to be
vigilant in making provisions for redemptions when they happen in 3-5 years’ time.Read more here.In an article titled
‘US trade pact – a one-way street?’, Biswajit Dhar analyses the bilateral trade agreement with the US which has
been in the works for a while. He is critical of the US approach which seems to prioritise the interests of its
stakeholders without offering any meaningful concessions to India.Read more here. Comments Published on August 1, 2026
